MARCH MADNESS: CENTRAL SERIES FINALE HELD IN BLIZZARD
Diminished Bear Valley Squad Steps-up
by Warren Alford
Pinecrest, CA- The final races of the Central Series’ 2012 season were held at Dodge Ridge on Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25. Dodge Ridge did a fantastic job pulling off two days of competitive racing with as good of conditions as could have been hoped for. Bear Valley had a tiny squad, but again took a disproportionate share of the podium space.
Saturday weather held and course was bullet in the a.m., pretty slurpy in the p.m.
Sunday started with 6”-8” of fluff that had to be scraped off the course and puking snow. Race officials “hoped” to get one off before dumpage forced cancellation; a sucker window opened in the sky and held long enough for the second run to be held… the storm closed back in as the first fore-runner took the course and the entire second run was held in heavy snow that caused visibility issues, but not enough accumulation to affect the race.
Michelle again took the top spot both days for the J5 Girls. Abby had a nasty crash on Saturday but came back with two solid runs on Sunday for 3rd. Gennady was 2nd on Saturday and 3rd on Sunday. Christian was 5th on Saturday and DNF’d on Sunday. Michael continued to ski well and was 7th on Saturday and 5th on Sunday. Sawyer was 4th on Saturday and came from behind to take 1st on Sunday. Danny was in 3rd place after his but had a hard crash on his second run and still managed to finish (without a ski pole) 10th on Saturday. He moved up to 8th on Sunday.
In the J6 Boys, Carson was 2nd both days, Etty was 4th both days and Jake was 9th Saturday and 8th Sunday. Ellianna was 9th Saturday and 8th Sunday for the J5 Girls.
The complete top 10 list is as follows:

Bear Valley Racers Dominate Top Spot On China Peak Podium
Dodge Ridge Holds On To Central Series Lead
by Warren Alford
Huntington Lake, CA- The China Peak Ski Team hosted the second race of the FarWest Central Series over the March 3-4 weekend and used the home court to their advantage, winning the most points and moving ahead of Bear Valley into second place in the division. Dodge Ridge held on to a slim lead in the overall race for the season title and the coveted “Rasmussen Cup” that is awarded to the highest scoring team at the end of the season. Unofficial point totals are listed below.
J4 Boys
Bear Valley’s Gennady Sytnik had the fastest times both Saturday and Sunday to remain unbeaten in the category this season. Christian Davidson was in the third spot Saturday and had one of the more dramatic ski pre-releases in recent memory on Sunday with his ski arcing so much the binding opened like a trap and launched him.
Michael Fellows was fourth on Saturday but along with Christian, DNF’d on Sunday. John McGrory was talking his way through the course on Saturday, finishing 8th after getting bucked off at the mid-course bump but came back with a 3rd place finish Sunday.
Max Wu had a difficult 1st run Saturday, but a top 10 second run then had a good first run Sunday before a pre-race injury from a collision with a teammate (ok, it was Sawyer) forced him out of the competition.
Team Totals: BV- 92; CP- 84; DR- 13; YWC- 0
J4 Girls
Abby Youngblood (BV) rebounded from a challenging run Saturday wearing borrowed ski boots (certain SUR Award nomination) to win on Sunday laying down the two fastest times and a 4 second advantage over the next fastest racer.
Sarah Pye finished both days unlike a number of other racers and was 17th on Saturday and 14th Sunday.
Team Totals: DR- 90; CP- 69; BV- 38; YWC: 0
J5 Boys
Danny Youngblood DQ’d Saturday but grabbed the 5 spot on Sunday with two strong runs Sunday. Sawyer Alford hiked twice in the first run Saturday leaving himself over 20 seconds to make up but managed a 14th place finish with the second fastest second run. He DNF’d Sunday.
Carson Parco moved up from the J6s for BV into the 9th place scoring badly needed points for the team on Saturday.
Team Totals: DR- 117; CP- 61; BV- 21; YWC: 0
J5 Girls
Bear Valley’s Michelle Morozinski extended her unbeaten streak this season even though
this remains the most competitive category in the Central Series.
Diana McGrory “skied up” into the J5s on Sunday with a 9th place finish.
Team Totals: CP- 94; DR- 57; BV- 57; YWC: 2

Rasmussen Classic SL Race Results
The opening race of the Central Series, the “Rasmussen Classic Slalom” ran under crisp, clear skies concluding a successful opening weekend of competitive skiing in the central Sierra. Teams from China Peak (formerly Sierra Summit), Dodge Ridge, Badger Pass and Bear Valley converged on the slopes at Bear Valley Mountain to begin the dash for the “Rasmussen Cup”, the prize awarded to the best team overall at the conclusion of the season.
In J4 Boys Gennedy Sytnik finished first on both days with Christian Davidson in second and John McGrory in 4th on Saturday and John McGrory taking 2nd on Sunday.
For the J4 Girls, Abby Youngblood swept the first place podium with a commanding lead both days.
In J5 Boys, the BV ceded the podium spots on Saturday to quick racers Regan Wallis and Evan Lear from Dodge Ridge and Joshua Salinas from China Peak. On Sunday, Sawyer Alford nabbed 1st place with Danny Youngblood coming in 4th.
The J5 Girls from BV were also kept off the podium on Saturday but Sofia Graziani put in a strong showing in 4th place. But on Sunday, Michelle Morozinski, ripped into 1st place.
For the J3 Boys in a non-scored race, Dominic Graziani, Matt Smith and Kyle Voigtlander took 1st, 3rd and 4th. On Sunday, the same trio took 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
A new perpetual trophy has been created for this race to both honor the Rasmussen ski-racing legacy and establish a new tradition at the Rasmussen Classic Slalom race. This award, tentatively called the “Brass Bell”, will be given to the Central Series’ J4 boy and girl with the fastest combined times from both races. The first winners of the Brass Bell were Bear Valley’s Abby Youngblood and Gennady Sytnik who were presented with an engraved brass cowbell, a nod to both the cowbell’s iconic status cheering in ski racing and to pay homage to the ranching history of the Rasmussen family who continue the tradition today.
